Get started with your Ledger device

Protect your crypto and digital assets using a hardware wallet built for security and simplicity. This guide walks you step-by-step from unboxing to your first secure transaction.

Why use a hardware wallet?

A hardware wallet stores your private keys offline, away from internet threats. Compared with software wallets, Ledger devices give you a tamper-resistant environment, secure recovery options, and clear transaction verification on a device screen.

Step-by-step setup

Follow these steps carefully to initialize your Ledger device, create a secure recovery phrase, and install an app to manage assets. Read every prompt on the device screen before confirming.

  1. Unbox & check packaging. Confirm your device is sealed and the packaging includes a recovery sheet. Never use a device with signs of tampering.
  2. Power on & choose a PIN. Connect the device, follow on-screen prompts, and set a PIN you will remember but others cannot guess. This PIN protects physical access to the device.
  3. Write down the recovery phrase. The device will display a 24-word recovery phrase (the "seed"). Write these words in order on the provided card — do not take a photo or store them digitally.
  4. Confirm and backup. The device will ask you to confirm a few words. Verify and then store your recovery card in a safe, fireproof place. Consider multiple geographically separated backups.
  5. Install Ledger Live. Download Ledger Live (desktop or mobile) from the official site and pair the device. Ledger Live is the companion app for sending/receiving and installing currency apps.
  6. Install apps & create accounts. Using Ledger Live, install the apps you need (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum), then add accounts. Ledger Live will show balances only when the device is connected and unlocked.
  7. Receive a test transaction. Send a small test amount to a new address shown on the device and verify the address on the device’s screen before confirming in Ledger Live.

Security best practices

Security is layers — device, backup, and behavior. Below are essential practices to reduce risk and keep your assets safe for the long term.

  • Never share your 24 words. Ledger staff or support will never ask for it.
  • Keep backups offline. Use hardware safe or safety deposit box. Consider metal backup tools for fire resistance.
  • Verify addresses on the device. Always confirm that the receiving address shown in the companion app matches the address on your Ledger screen.
  • Use passphrase feature cautiously. An optional passphrase adds a second factor but increases complexity — understand the implications before enabling it.
  • Buy only from official channels. To avoid tampered devices, order directly from the official store or authorized resellers.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I lose my device?
Use your 24-word recovery phrase to restore your accounts on a new Ledger device or compatible wallet that supports BIP39/BIP44. Keep your recovery phrase secure and accessible only to you.
Can Ledger recover my funds if I forget my PIN?
No. If you forget your PIN but have the recovery phrase, you can reset the device and restore with the recovery phrase. Without the recovery phrase, funds are unrecoverable.
Is Bluetooth safe?
Bluetooth on Nano X is encrypted. If you prefer not to use wireless connectivity, use a USB cable. The device still requires physical confirmation for transactions.
